And avoiding what you don’t want is incredibly important. When you’re avoid-oriented, you’re moving yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically away from something you don’t want. You’re moving proactively toward (“approaching”) a desired outcome. When you’re approach-oriented, you’re moving yourself mentally, emotionally, and physically toward what you want. Every action you take is driven by an outcome you’re seeking. Your “orientation” is your posture and energy toward your actions. Psychologists have divided our motivation to act into two categories: approach-orientation or avoid-orientation. Getting clear on the specific outcome you want is essential for not only training your attention but for powering-up your motivation. You must “begin with the end in mind,” as Stephen Covey put it. You need to be very specific in what you want. Therefore, you need to focus on what you want. What we focus our attention on, we create more of. This is bad mind-training, because what we focus on expands. We spend lots of time conjuring up Plan Bs, Cs, and Ds in case what we want doesn’t work out.Īs a result, we are focusing on how things could go wrong or why things aren’t going right. We focus on what we don’t want to happen. The challenge for most of us is that we spend much more of our time focusing on what we’re afraid of. You can and must train your mind to focus exclusively on the things you desire. When you’re on the road driving, you’ll notice specific cars - whether it’s cars you like or the same car you’re driving. When you’re in a noisy room, if you hear your name being said you’ll hear it, even though all the other noise just sounds like fuzz. Psychologists have a term, “Selective attention,” and what it means is that our mind focuses on things which seem relevant to us. Most people are very lazy with their focus, and their mind becomes like a garden filled with weeds. The first concept is attention - where you place your focus. There are three psychological concepts you must understand to start getting what you want and to stop perpetuating what you don’t. “What you focus on expands, and when you focus on the goodness in your life, you create more of it.” - Oprah Winfrey ![]()
